Sports in Austria
In 2008 Austria, together with
Switzerland, will be staging the
EURO 2008 – the most prestigious
soccer event in Europe. In 2007,
Vienna hosted the European American
Football championships.
Vienna’s Chrysler Vikings are among
the world’s best amateur teams in
American football. Toni Fritsch was
the first Austrian to play on a
winning Super Bowl team (Dallas Cowboys). He ended his
football career playing for the New
Orleans Saints.
It’s no surprise that winter sports
are extremely popular in Austria,
considering its geography and
climate. Skiing is number one in
Austria, closely followed by
snowboarding and curling.
Austria has over 27,000 sports clubs
for amateur and professional
athletes. Soccer is the most popular
team sport. Soccer is known as
“König Fußball (FOOS-ball)”: King
Football, with over 300,000 people
registered in soccer clubs around
the country.
Andi Herzog, one of Europe’s best
midfield players, is now team
manager for the Austrian National
team. You may get a chance to meet
Andi at the 2007 Ambassador Games. |
